The Brief Biography of the Living Buddha Geshe Jiamuyang Tubudan

Geshe Jiamuyang Tubudan was born in 1925 in Ordos, Inner Mongolia. He became a monk at Bodhijidu Temple in Hangjin Banner. This temple is the largest Tibetan Buddhist temple in western Inner Mongolia and was built in the early Ming Dynasty. Later, he studied Dharma at Kumbum Monastery in Qinghai and obtained a doctorate degree in Buddhist Geshe.

In 1990, he was elected as a member of the Beijing Municipal People’s Political Consultative Conference.
In 1992, he served as the vice president of the Beijing Buddhist Association.
In 1993, he served as the abbot of Yonghe Temple in Beijing and the executive director of the Buddhist Association of China.
In 2002, he served as the vice president of the Buddhist Association of China.

While the Living Buddha was stationed in Yonghe Temple, he taught tirelessly while working on the compilation of Buddhist scriptures and treatises. Jointly published the languages of Tibetan and Mongolian Source of Wisdom; proofread and published the Four Medical Classics of Buddhism; written in Tibetan versions of The Biography of the Buddha Jataka, The Biography of the Living Buddha Wulan, The Bodhisattva Sutra and many other books to benefit sentient beings. His writings showed his profound attainments in Buddhism and his compassionate heart in propagating the Dharma and benefiting living beings.

In 2007, at the age of 83, the Living Buddha returned to his hometown of Hangjin Banner to hold a Dharma ritual. The ritual began when the Living Buddha led his disciples to practice Dharma in the scenic area of the Kubuqi Desert. As soon as the chanting started, a miracle happened! The sky suddenly changed, and raindrops in the desert, as precious as oil, fell instantly in a downpour. The Living Buddha ignored the wind and rain, remained firm, and focused on practicing the Dharma until the ritual for more than three hours was completed.

In September 2020, at the age of 96 nearly a hundred, the Living Buddha sought Dharma from Kangning Temple in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia. He taught all the monks how to observe the precepts and practices, passed down the consecration ceremony, and imparted the empowerment of the Trinity and the essentials of life-long practice for monks. The Living Buddha devoted himself to the cultivation and inheritance of monk talents. All monk talents in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning, Shanxi, Hebei and other places have received the help and guidance from the Living Buddha.

On August 14, 2022, the living Buddha passed away peacefully at Bodhijidu Temple in Hangjin Banner. His worldly life was 98 years old while his monastic age was 92 years old. The living Buddha practiced diligently throughout his life, integrating both Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism with wisdom and enlightenment. He cultivated the Buddha’s seed, passed on the Buddha’s wisdom and life, and shined in the future forever! The flowers in Buddhism faded, and the enlightened boat sank in the sea. Now that the Living Buddha has achieved Bodhi and is at great ease. All sentient beings were in mourning!
